Delta Tennis Finishes State Runner-Up

The greatest 12-day stretch ever for Delta Tennis concluded late Saturday afternoon with a runner-up finish in the IHSAA Team State Finals for the first time in school history.

The 6th-ranked Eagles lost 4-1 to #1 ranked Hamilton Southeastern in the championship match at North Central High School courts on a cool but sunny afternoon.

Delta, with 826 students, became the smallest public school to reach the championship match in 23 years since West Lafayette lost to Carmel in the fall of 2003.

It was the first time that any sport at Delta has been State Runner-Up in a single-class sport since the Delta boys' basketball team achieved legendary status as the 1997 state runner-up in the final year of single-class hoops in Indiana.

Over the past two weeks, the Eagles were giant-killers multiple times, with different heroes nearly every night.

In the regional finals on Oct. 6, Delta beat 11th-ranked Westfield (3,064 students) by a 3-2 score.  Crucial victories came from #1 singles Jackson Darby, #1 doubles Tyce Dishman/Brandon Grubbs in three sets, and #2 doubles Easton Duckworth/Roman Ashcraft.

In the semistate on Oct. 10, Delta beat 10th-ranked Penn (3,475 students) by a 5-0 score. Every position won in straight sets, although most were tough battles.

In the opening round of the State Finals on Oct. 16, Delta eliminated private school Evansville Memorial 4-1 in a match moved indoors to the UIndy Tennis Center due to rain and cold.  Darby and Charlie Vannatter picked up singles victories, with Dishman/Grubbs winning at #1 doubles and Ashcraft and Kiptyn Schwartz pulling out a third-set tiebreak at #2 doubles. Luke Atkinson at #3 singles dropped a three-set match to an strong player and came away from the match extremely agitated by his second postseason loss after entering regional with a 20-match winning streak.

Luke and the rest of the team quickly had to get regrouped for a Saturday, Oct. 17 morning semifinal showdown with third-ranked Center Grove, a school of 2,956 students.  Delta and Center Grove had never before met in a dual match in boys' tennis.

The Eagles knew the Trojans would be difficult to beat. After all, Center Grove is a 16-time state finalist and has two state championships in boys' tennis along with several runner-up finishes, the last one coming just two years ago.  And this season the Trojans had many impressive wins, including 4-1 over then-No. 1 ranked Carmel in mid-September. Center Grove also had top 10 wins over Jasper twice (4-1 and 5-0), Brebeuf (4-1) and Bloomington South (5-0).

Compounding the challenge was the fact that Center Grove brings a large choir of JV players who loudly celebrate nearly every point a Trojan wins.  This creates a chaotic match-long atmosphere that Delta almost never experiences.

Relying on its team motto of EMBR(ACE) -- Attitude / Character / Effort -- and its mantra of "Everything You Want Can Be Found on the Other Side of Hard,"  the humble but hungry Eagles were ready for the challenge.

The tough-minded Eagles pulled out a 3-2 victory to secure the semifinal upset after nearly three hours of grueling tennis.

Center Grove had built a quick 2-0 lead in the match with decisive victories at #1 singles and #2 doubles.

Charlie Vannatter started the Eagles' comeback with a 6-2, 6-0 over CG junior Alexander Kandris, a player Charlie had lost to in the past in an offseason tournament.  Charlie executed his game plan to perfection for his best win of the season.

But the Eagles still faced a tough task as CG had won the first sets at both #3 singles and #1 doubles. And we need to win both matches to advance.

Dishman and Grubbs fell far behind in the opening set at #1 doubles as the CG team of senior Austin Crow and junior Manaav Kamath used an aggressive style and tremendous volley skills to put constant pressure on the Eagles.  Near the end of the first set Tyce and Brandon began to execute their plan better, and although they dropped the set 4-6, there was more hope.  Tyce and Brandon evened the match with a 6-1 victory in the second set, then battled their way to a 6-4 win in the decisive third set to even the team match at 2-2.

That left the match in the hands of Luke Atkinson.  Less than 24 hours after venting about his perception of being unable to win a big match on a big stage, Luke rallied to beat CG's Hudson Pagels 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Nearly the entire last set was played with the team match knotted at 2-2 and several hundred fans watching the pressure-packed action on his court.

After winning match point with an angled volley at the net after a 12-hit rally, Luke launched his racket to the right of the court and basked in the cheering of a couple hundred Delta fans celebrating an amazing team win.  Included in the crowd were several current college students who were members of the Delta girls' tennis team that also had reached the State Final Four in the spring as well as many other DHS Tennis alumni from the past 30 years. Also enjoying the moment were Coach Cleland's parents, Dave and Jeanne, who have watched the Eagles compete in 13 state meets (six for the boys and seven for the girls) but had never previously been able to see Delta advance to the championship match.

There wasn't much time to celebrate, however, as the state championship match was less than two hours from starting.  And the opponent would be #1 ranked Hamilton Southeastern, another giant school of 3,547 students with a 21-match winning streak after a 3-2 loss to Carmel in the season opener.

Both Delta and HSE were in the state championship match for the first time. And another interesting side story was that HSE athletic director Tilmon Clark joined the Royals a little over a year ago after serving as AD at Delta.

On Sept. 5, the Royals had beaten Delta 4-1 in the finals of the Fort Wayne Carroll Invitational.  The lineups were not exactly the same for both teams and that match was the third match of a long day, so there wasn't too much stock that either team could put in that earlier result.

With outstanding players at #1 singles, #2 singles, and both doubles positions, HSE was a clear favorite after eliminating #2 Zionsville and #3 South Bend St. Joseph in the first two rounds of state.

Three matches ended pretty quickly.

HSE took a 2-1 lead early.  Luke Atkinson cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Dilan Gavin at #3 singles.   HSE's Abhi Manikandan defeated Jackson Darby 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles, and HSE's Evan Holderman/Hudson Osswald won 6-3, 6-2 over Easton Duckworth / Roman Ashcraft at #2 doubles.

HSE also had won the opening sets at #2 singles (6-3) and #1 doubles (6-1) and seemed in firm control of the match.  Did the comeback kids have one more trick up their sleeve?

The answer was yes.

Charlie Vannatter at #2 singles and Tyce Dishman / Brandon Grubbs at #1 doubles put together an hour of gritty tennis to keep alive the Eagles' hopes of a state championship.  Suddenly there was a chance that both matches could be extended into third sets.

Playing just a court away from each other on Court 3 and Court 5 of the North Central complex, the Eagles refused to die.

Vannatter forced a second-set tiebreak against Parker Stump.  And at the same time, Dishman / Grubbs had leveled their second set at 5-5 against Brady Stump and Logan Foust.

Alas, the matches ended within moments of each other as the Stump brothers won 7-6 (5) at #2 singles and 7-5 at #1 doubles to secure the championship for the Royals.

Delta walked away with their heads high as they held the State Runner-Up trophy for the first time.

Amazingly, the Eagles did this with a young varsity lineup of one senior, two juniors, four sophomores and a freshman.  The team's alternates also included a senior, a junior, four more sophomores and another freshman.  An excellent eight-grader also will join the mix next fall.

Nothing is guaranteed in sports, however, so who knows that the future may hold.  That can wait for another day.

Senior Tyce Dishman ends his career with the best season of his life.  He and first-year partner sophomore Brandon Grubbs compiled team-best records of 27 wins and 3 losses, losing twice to #1 HSE and once to #2 Zionsville.  They are highly likely to be First Team All-State Doubles when those selections are made next weekend.

Dishman finished his four-year varsity doubles career with a record of 74 wins, 17 losses.  He ranks 12th all-time among boys in DHS Tennis and would almost certainly have finished among the top 8 if not for a bicycle accident prior to his sophomore season that sidelined him for several matches with a broken hand.

Dishman will compete in the North-South Senior All-Star match on Nov. 8th at the Community Sports and Wellness tennis center in Pendleton.

Three other seniors (Denys Krushenytskyi, Grant Durkovich and Jason Ogle) also will graduate this year.

Other final season records for the varsity Eagles:

No. 1 singles -- Sophomore Jackson Darby -- 22-7 this season.  He likely will be named All-State Singles next weekend and could be First Team after making Second Team a year ago.

No. 2 singles -- Sophomore Charlie Vannatter -- 24-6 this season. Charlie now has 44 varsity wins in just two seasons and may be in discussion for All State Singles as his game continues to grow.

No. 3 singles -- Junior Luke Atkinson -- 26-4 this season. Luke now has 63 career varsity wins and is likely to finish among the Top 8 in Eagle history if all goes well next season.  He will likely be All-State Singles Honorable Mention this season.

No. 2 doubles -- Freshman Easton Duckworth finished 20-6 in his first season of varsity tennis.  Junior Roman Ashcraft was 17-3 in his first season of varsity.  And sophomore Kiptyn Schwartz was 11-3 in his first season of varsity tennis.  Another junior, Owen Zacek, was 2-0 at varsity doubles this year.

Stay tuned for upcoming information about the postseason tennis banquet.  Off season training opportunities include clinics and lessons at First Serve Tennis (which start this next week) and Junior Team Tennis leagues (which also start next weekend).

For now, the 2026 season comes to a close, capped by the excitement of a firetruck escort back to Delta late Saturday night.  Thank you to all the players, managers, parents, grandparents and other supporters of this team.  And a special thank you to assistant coaches Tate Dishman, Bob Darby and Shane Hartman for all your assistance to head coach Tim Cleland throughout the season.  It takes all of us to accomplish the special things that we have been able to experience!
